The Process

Getting your storm shelter installed is a simple and well-planned process, designed to give you lasting safety and peace of mind. Knowing what to expect can make everything feel smoother and more reassuring. From start to finish, the installation includes careful planning, precise setup, and strong finishing touches to make sure your shelter is secure and ready when you need it most. Here’s a step-by-step look at how the installation works.

Step 1

The installation team will start by marking the spot where your shelter will go. Next, they’ll carefully dig a hole about 12 feet long and 10 feet wide. The depth will vary depending on the model: 5 ½ feet deep for the REFUGE 1, and 7 feet deep for the REFUGE and MINI REFUGE models. They’ll also make sure the door opening is set at least 6 inches above ground level to ensure proper placement and safety.

Step 3

After the shelter is securely in place, the team will pour concrete over the tops of the pipes—about 1 ½ yards on each side—to help keep the shelter firmly anchored. In some cases, they may use heavy prefabricated cement blocks instead, which together weigh around 5,000 pounds. These blocks serve the same purpose: preventing any movement and making sure your shelter stays right where it needs to be.

Step 2

Next, steel pipes will be inserted into the built-in sleeves at the bottom of the shelter. Once that’s done, the team will gently lower the shelter into the hole and make sure it’s perfectly level. They’ll then mark where the augers will go—these are installed near each corner of the shelter, both front and back. The augers are securely anchored into the ground, and strong banding straps are placed over the shelter and tightened to keep everything stable, level, and firmly in place.

Step 4

To finish up, the team will backfill the area around the shelter with dirt, packing it down carefully to remove any air pockets—especially beneath the steps. About 6 inches of soil will be added over the top of the shelter. As the ground naturally settles over the next few days or after a good rain, a bit more dirt may need to be added. The team will also make sure the ground is graded to direct water away from the shelter and its door, helping to maintain good drainage and keep everything dry.
